Langkasuka is a Malaysian historical period drama directed by Yasmin Ahmad. It is a joint venture of the Malaysian Film Development Corporation, Singapore Film Commission and Singapore Broadcasting Corporation in association with NTV7 in Malaysia, Channel U in Singapore and the Java-based RCTI network in Indonesia. The film is about Prince Jaya Pakuan who is exiled from Majapahit to Langkasuka under orders of his father Hayam Wuruk (1357 - 1389) Sultan of Majapahit. Jaya Pakuan would return to Majapahit as Raja Sulalim after defeating Langkasuka's king who was trying to conquer Java. The film was released on 8 January 2009 in Malaysia, 25 July 2009 in Singapore and 14 September 2009 in Indonesia. In 1407, after the fall of the Majapahit Empire to a combined force of rebel noblemen and her rival neighboring kingdoms, a young prince named Jaya Pakuan is banished from the court to a remote island in the East Java sea under orders from his father. There he is to learn about seafaring and commanding a ship, with hopes that one day he will return with an army to recapture Majapahit from its usurpers. After years of exile, Jaya Pakuan sets sail for home with the armada he has amassed. In Majapahit, meanwhile, a young princess named Rara is being married off to a vassal king in an effort to forge an alliance with his kingdom. The marriage however is short lived after word of Majapahit's demise reaches the palace. A grieving Rara refuses to believe that her beloved homeland has been conquered and flees from her husband's domain by disguising herself as a beggar in order to seek out Jaya Pakuan who is rumoured to be alive and well, somewhere in the land of the South Seas. As Jaya Pakuan's armada approaches the Majapahit shores, Rara reaches the island and pleads with her former subjects to help her reclaim her homeland. But her pleas fall on deaf ears and so she descends further south and ends up in Langkasuka where she witnesses a bloody battle taking place. The fighting is between her husband's troops and those of a local kingdom led by a ruthless ruler bent on conquering Majapahit for himself, who also happens to be one of Jaya Pakuan's loyal generals. After witnessing the king's cruelty first hand, Rara promises his loyal subjects that she will help them thwart his conquest plans if they allow her to join their ranks as a warrior-princess. Impressed by her resolve, they agree to assist her with her long-standing unfulfilled quest. Unbeknownst to them, this is the start of Rara's true journey home. Jaya Pakuan is trained in the arts of war by the king of Langkasuka and becomes a strong general who eventually takes back his kingdom from its usurper ruler after constant battles. He also manages to restore Majapahit but he sacrifices his own life in trying to conquer other nations as well as attempts on his own life because of a promise he made with a demon. http://www.youtube.
